On March 15, 2007, the FDA found contaminants in vegetable proteins imported into the United States from China and used as ingredients in pet food. There was a massive recall, but pets that were already exposed continued to fall ill.

By 2008, a number of lawsuits had been filed against pet food manufacturers. A number of owners realized that they could be compensated for the vet bills and the pain and suffering they experienced as a result of the death of their pets.

Just because a product is intended to be used by an animal such as a dog or a cat instead of a human does not mean that the company that creates this product is not held to standards for safety. A dog or a cat deserves safe products just as much as any other member of the family.
