Bicycle Injuries

Just like automobile accidents, bicycle accidents can happen when you least expect. Unlike automotive incidents, cyclists have much less protection and are prone to more severe injuries. Injuries from cycling accidents may include, but are not limited to:

Road Rash

An abrasion caused by falling onto and sliding along pavement or other hard surfaces. This injury varies in degree and can include anything from a scrape to deep lacerations, which can cause permanent scarring. This injury is generally treated by keeping the wound clean and free of infection while the skin heals over time.

Broken Bones

This injury can include simple fractures, in which the bone breaks without puncturing the skin, or compound fractures, in which the broken bone sticks out of the skin. Both types of fractures require casting, and compound fractures may require surgery.

Concussion

This can be caused whether the head was hit or not. This is an internal injury of the brain and can be easily overlooked. Symptoms may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Disorientation
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Difficulty with balance

You should talk to your doctor if you think you may have suffered a concussion. You cannot predict when you will be in a cycling accident. Similarly, you cannot predict what injuries you will suffer.
