Which Car Safety Seat is Right for Your Child?

The safety of a child is the top priority for any parent, and when ensuring a child’s safety in an automobile, there are a number of products available to make the process easier. However, when faced with the vast array of car safety seats available, choosing the best one for your child can seem a daunting task. Understanding the designs and purposes of different car safety seats is the first step in keeping your child safe.

Rear Facing Seats

Rear facing seats are should be used by all infants who are 1-year-old or younger, until they weigh at least 20 pounds.

Forward Facing Seats

Once a child is 1-year-old and weighs at least 20 pounds, he or she can be moved to a forward-facing seat. However, this change should not be rushed into, as it is safest for a child to ride in a rear-facing seat. They should only be moved to a forward-facing seat once they have outgrown the rear-facing design.

Booster Seats

Once a child has outgrown forward-facing seats, they will need to be moved up to a booster seat. The booster seat sits a child a bit higher in the back seat of a car so that the car’s seat belts (designed for adults) will fit properly and securely. These types of seats should be used until the child reaches a height of 4’9’’ and is between 8-years-old and 12-years-old.

Normal Seat Belts

Once a child has reached a height of 4’9’’ and no longer fits in a child booster seat, they are most likely ready to wear a seatbelt unaided.

All of these seats are intended to be used in the rear seats of a car. Children should ride in a car’s back seat until they are at least 13-years-old – not only for increased protection in the event of an accident, but also to prevent injury from airbag deployment.
