Causes of Tire Defects

Tire defects can cause very dangerous accidents that result in terrible injuries to the occupants of cars. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine from the outset whether a tire will be defective or safe.

Tire defects start as small cracks on the side of a tire. They are frequently due to design and manufacturing defects. Once the small cracks form, they become gradually larger cracks that occur between the belts on a radial tire. This causes premature tire fatigue and tread failure. Tire separation is particularly dangerous with vans and SUVs because they have a high center of gravity. This high center of gravity makes them prone to rollover accidents.

A leading cause of tread separation lies in the design and placement of belts and overlying tread. Separations can also occur due to poor adhesion of the tire components. Poor adhesion can be due to the use of old and expired adhesives, improper temperatures in the manufacturing facilities, and unclean manufacturing facilities. It may also be a result of contaminants introduced during manufacturing process. Rust, moisture, oxidation, grease, sawdust, gum wrappers, and cigarette butts are some of the many potential contaminants that can be introduced during the manufacturing process.

Another common cause of tire separation is the failure of metal tire components to stick to the non-metal components. In order to make the metal and non-metal stick, the metal is covered in brass. This is then treated with a sulfur-based type of glue which makes the metal and non-metal stick. However, if the sulfur and other compounds aren’t in the correct ratio to each other, incomplete adhesion occurs. This results in a defective tire.
