Fraternity Settles for $4.2 Million in Pledge’s Death

A University of Texas freshman died in 2005 after a binge drinking party. The family of Jack Phoummarath settled with the fraternity Lambda Phi Epsilon for $4.2 million. The party was part of the pledge process, and it resulted in acute alcohol poisoning.

Phoummarath’s blood content level was .50. The family has put the proceeds towards an educational video “Enough is Enough” which is featured on www.InMemoryOfJack.com. In addition, a scholarship fund will be established at the University of Texas for $8,000-10,000a year along with an educational program on hazing and binge drinking.

The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers is calling for legislation to protect children from potential harm caused by tanning beds. They feel that anyone under the age of 18 should not be using UV tanning equipment.

The Health and Safety Executive currently states that tanning bed use is not recommended for those under the age of 16. The lawyers want customers to sign a consent form recognizing that they understand the risks.

Girl Life Flighted in ATV Accident

A 17 year old girl was taken by Life Flight to St. Vincent mercy Medical Center in Toledo Sunday afternoon. Azrah L.M. Collins was riding with a 14 year old boy on an ATV through a bean field.

The boy was able to jump off the vehicle before it crashed. The incident occurred near the intersection of TR 26 and SR 53. The girl is okay and has been released from the hospital according to the Seneca County Sherriff’s Office.
