360 million eggs recalled for salmonella

Posted on Friday, August 20th, 2010 at 4:53 am

Today, the Food and Drug Administration announced the expansion of an egg recall issued on August 13th, to include 360 million eggs distributed across the country.

The initial recall included 228 million eggs from three Wright County egg farms in Iowa.  Now, after further epidemiologic investigation, officials have expanded the recall to include all five Wright County egg farms.

The recall comes after complaints from consumers that they have suffered from salmonella food poisoning.  Salmonella is a bacteria that can get into a person's gastrointestinal tract and cause food poisoning.  The majority of complaints of food poisoning are clustered in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.

32-year old Justin Condon of Brodhead was killed in a tragic motor vehicle accident with an 18-wheeler semi-truck just after 9PM on Wednesday evening.  Condon was traveling eastbound on Wisconsin Highway 81 when he crossed over the center line and into oncoming westbound traffic.  Condon's mini-van then collided head-on with an 18-wheeler driven by 44-year old Jeffrey Smith of Rockford.  Authorities declared Condon dead upon impact.

Smith was taken to Beloit Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Condon's family and friends during this difficult time.
