A 40-year-old former Appleton firefighter was recently ordered by an Outagamie County judge to pay his stepson $850,000 for killing his mother in 2009.

The 40-year-old man was married to the woman but had been estranged from her for several months when he shot and killed her on April 17, 2009 outside of their home in Grand Chute. Six days following the murder, the woman's son filed a wrongful death lawsuit against his stepfather, citing loss of support and emotional distress caused by the murder.

In 2010, the man was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder, and, on Wednesday, a judge ruled in favor of the stepson, awarding him $850,000 for wrongful death and punitive damages.
