A jury has awarded the family that filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Virginia sheriff and city jail physician $2.4 million. According to court documents, the family believes the sheriff and the jail's chief physician are to blame for the death of a 46 year-old inmate.
The man was arrested on charges of property damage and driving with a suspended license after he suffered a seizure while driving and ran into a house. While behind bars, medical staff did not administer his seizure medication and ignored his complaints of chest, side, and abdominal pain. He was found unresponsive on the jail floor with no pulse the morning he died. An autopsy revealed that the man died of untreated pneumonia and even the defense's medical expert testified that he died of drowning in the pus that accumulated in his lungs.
