Officers arrest man on 8th DWI offense

Posted on Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 7:47 pm

Clark County sheriff’s deputies and a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper were led on a high speed chase for nearly half an hour last week by a 47 year-old Minneapolis man.

The man was intoxicated and refused to stop when police offices tried to pull him over for speeding. Troopers and deputies chased the man through rural Wisconsin as the driver reached speeds of 110 mph. Spikes had to be laid down in order for officers to stop the man.

He was eventually arrested and charged with this eighth driving while intoxicated charge as well as speeding, fleeing from police, and driving with a revoked license.

Safety Board urges cellphone ban while driving

Posted on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011 at 5:16 pm

The National Transportation Safety Board announced last week that it was proposing a nationwide ban on cellphones and other portable electronics use while driving. Only cellphone use in emergency situations and driving aid devices like GPS systems would be the exception.

In a survey the board conducted of 6,000 Americans, nearly a fifth of drivers and half of all drivers 21 to 24 years-old said they have texted or emailed while driving. The survey also found that most drivers do not think it is dangerous when they use their cellphones, but think it is when other people do.

The NTSB will not be able to enforce this ban, but lawmakers and federal regulators take the board’s recommendations seriously.

Woman killed in elevator accident

Posted on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

A 41 year-old woman was killed this morning in a freak elevator accident in Manhattan. At around 10 am, the woman was walking into a first floor elevator when it suddenly began to ascend, crushing her between the elevator shaft and the car before it became stuck between the first and second floors.

Two people inside the elevator watched helplessly as the elevator continued to rise. They were taken to the hospital for psychological trauma.

An inspection by the New York City Department of Buildings over the summer showed that a defect was found in one of the elevators. An investigation will be conducted to find the malfunction that caused this terrible accident.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim.

Dangerous levels of arsenic found in fruit juices

Posted on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 at 6:34 pm

A Consumer Reports investigation has revealed that fruit juices contain dangerous levels of inorganic arsenic, a known carcinogen. The FDA claims that arsenic found in apple and grape juices is organic and “essentially harmless.”

Consumer Reports’ findings show otherwise. In 10% of the juice samples it tested of five different brands had inorganic arsenic levels that exceed the federal drinking water standards of 10 parts per billion. There is currently no federal arsenic limit on juices.

Inorganic arsenic can cause an increase risk of cardiovascular disease, immunodeficiencies, and type 2 diabetes. It is also known to cause lung, bladder, and skin cancer.
