Wisconsin plant fined for explosion

Posted on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 at 9:00 pm

The Fond du Lac Milk Specialties Co. plant has been fined for three safety violations stemming from a dust explosion that occurred last summer.

The fire and explosion started in a machine, which sent heavy smoke throughout the five-story building. OSHA has fined the company for a willful violation for dust combustible hazards and Milk Specialties Co. has been ordered to pay $72,000.

Milk Specialties Co., which converts liquid whey products into dry whey powder, denies an explosion ever occurred. Instead, it claims that a small piece of milk product began to smoulder and produce smoke. The company has 15 days to consent or appeal the citations.

Mix up could cause unintentional pregnancy

Posted on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 7:25 pm

The drug manufacturer Pfizer has announced it will be recalling nearly a million birth control pills after a placebo mix up could cause users to become pregnant.

Lo/Ovral-28 and its generic forms, norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol, with expiration dates between July 31, 2013 to March 31, 2014 are the brands affected by the recall. Women who believe they have a defective package should begin using non-hormonal contraception immediately.

A 32 year-old woman has already filed a lawsuit against Pfizer after she become pregnant while taking birth control pills. The placebo mix up is not expected to cause any harm to the baby should a pregnancy occur.
