Plane crashes into a house in Santa Monica

Posted on Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 at 8:20 am

A pilot is lucky to be alive after he crashed his Cessna 172 airplane into a vacant house on Monday. The man, who was in training, suffered only a broken leg. The single-engined aircraft was broken in half from the impact and the wings were ripped off after it hit some tree branches on its way down. Three men working on the home are also lucky; they told investigators that they were just able to avoid the plane before it landed in house.

Federal investigators are now searching for a cause of the incident. They are listening to tapes between the pilot and air traffic control as well as interviewing witnesses. The National Transportation Safety Board has taken the plane to a storage facility in Los Angeles to examine the plane for any signs of malfunction or defects.
