SSRIs and Birth Defects

For an expectant mother, there are few things more alarming than the idea that her unborn child may be injured in one way or another. But no matter how vigilant a mother is about ensuring that everything is done right during a pregnancy, if she is sick and ordered to take a medication by her trusted doctor, she will likely do it. But occasionally, the medications she is prescribed can hurt her baby.

The most common birth defect seen in women who have been taking certain SSRIs is persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, or PPHN. Babies can easily die of this condition or experience serious organ damage.

Mothers who have children that have been affected by SSRI use while pregnant have the right to fight back against the drug companies that manufacture these anti-depressants.
